Knowing Meta Tags on your Webpages

meta tagMeta Tags actually is added information about a website or a webpage that placed on the header of the HTML code of our pages. So, what is the Meta Tags looks liked?

Here a few explanation:

Meta Tag Description

[META NAME=”description” CONTENT=”this is website about free ebooks”]

From the sample above, we’ll shown that meta tag description contains information about our website description or our pages description. Ideally, this meta tag contains not morethan 180 characters (included space) or about 25 words.

Meta Tag Keywords

[ META NAME=”keywords” CONTENT=”free ebooks, new ebooks, ebooks author, writer, best seller ebooks” ]

Meta tag keywords contains keywords related website or webpages of the sites. The keywords could be phrases or words, and ideally meta tag doesn’t contains more than 10 keywords.

Meta Tag Robots

[ META NAME=”robots” CONTENT=”index, follow” ]

Meta tag robots contains information for robots or search engine crawler. On the sample above, search engine crawler allowed to indexing related pages and follow the links on the pages. Actually this meta tag quite rare to use because there is a solution that more flexible to face this robot, that is using file robots.txt.

Meta Tag Refresh

[ META NAME=”refresh” CONTENT=”5″ ]

Meta tag refresh use to give instruction to browser for refreshing or reloading its website or webpage in the certain time. At the sample above, the site of page will be reload at every 60 seconds.

[ meta name="refresh” content=”5;URL=http://yourotherdomain.com” ]

The advantages of this meta tag refresh, the other one is to point towards or redirecting visitors to a website or page after certain time period. At the sample above, visitors will be direct to another .com domain after 5 seconds.

The use of meta tag refresh often time followed by meta http-equiv. What is look like?

[ meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" ]

At the http-equiv pragma above, we give instruction to browser to un-cache (saving from its page to the computer) the website, therefore every time visitors accessing the website then they must reload the website from where server lacated.

Besides the meta tags mentioned above, there are actually many other meta tags. However, what we need to understand well is just what meta tags above. Too much know will make us got less practice, right…? :D
