The first step, is to get a listing in a popular directory, such as Yahoo and Open Directory Project. It is also the fastest way to get your foot in the door. You will want to be listed on Yahoo, if your site is business-related, and it will be money well spent despite it will cost you around $300 a year in the fact. And the listing will be free, if your site is non-commercial, but it will need follow-up and take time to actually get it listed. Whether you are non-commercial or business-related, Open Directory is gives you a free listing but be prepared before you see your site listed to make a lot of follow-up inquiries.
In the highest level of appropriate category, sure you are aiming to get listed and this just takes some common sense. For instance, if your company Food Cows Libary located in the middle of Nowhere, Floor Earth, do NOT submit your listing to “Retailers from Nowhere, Floor Earth.” BIG MISTAKE! All you have to do is look a little deeper, and submit your listing to the “Food Mamalia” category. You will be listed in a national category, not only associate yourself with quality and culture.
